A professional colleague recently wrote:
I have observed APM 08279+5255 with 60cm telescope and an eyepiece
-- it's sort of fun to see a z >3 object with your own eyes.

Perhaps others will want to try it. NED gives coordinates of
08h31m41.593s +52d45m17.01s J2000. The object is a broad absorption
line QSO at z=3.92. Its visual magnitude is supposed to be 15.2, but
I wouldn't be surprised if that's inaccurate. The object is likely to
be quite red.

Good news for all those amateurs with 60cm scopes! <g >

Actually, if it's really mag 15.2, you should be able to manage with
quite a bit less than that.

I can manage the eyepiece, the 60 cm is a tad more difficult.
