For the end user of a system which holds news at the user machine (I suspect Thunderbird of resembling Turnpike in that), such floods have (at least) three ways of being annoying :- #1 communications load #2 local disc space load #3 personal inconvenience. Only the news supplier or the newsreader authors can deal with #1 properly. Generally, I suspect #2 is not important. If your newsreader stores news on your disc before you read the stuff, and does so in a plain-text format, might it be possible for an ordinary Software Developer to write a program, to be used after collection but before perusal, that would identify the unwanted articles and either mark them as read or remove them entirely, thus dealing with #3 & maybe #2? If the newsreader has a mode where it collects headers but not bodies, it might be possible to set a group to that mode, and with a program to add to the wanted-bodies list just those in the group which were not detected as abnormal. -- (c) John Stockton, Surrey, UK. mmmmm.... I was just thinking about countering this onslaught with one of my own. If I started posting up planets, asteroids, comets etc. it would at least push the spammers off the front page of the newsreader. Of course that would make a mess out of someone's email reader but clicclicclic >DELETE ALL fixes that. It would provide some form of resistance and besides, it's too hot to do any effective observing here. Ben

Well, things like this do make it difficult on some of us who borrow another's computer from time to time. In another NG I found myself locked out because of 'net nanny' type software meant to shield people from smut. (I am self filtering but I digress...). It means someone on the receiving end needs to do some work, times how many hundreds and thousands of individual people out here. wtf? TBerk

(By the way, these posts read much more like an AI bot > posting than Gerald's do.) Google "sporge flood." This isn't just something aimed at SAA. Apparently the source is cleverly distributed in some way like a virus, so there isn't any simply way for it to be blocked at the server level. I found references to sporge floods on usenet clear back to 1999! Funny I never heard of them before now. Recently it always seems to start with a warning posted to the newsgroup that a "sporge flood" is scheduled that takes the appearance of an advertisement for supernews. Some people lightly suggest filtering on cross posts, but my favorite newsreader can't do that (yet). I've tried the newsreaders that can and I didn't like them much. Come to think of it, the reason I probably haven't seen one of these before is that I changed ISPs last summer. The old one had a much better news server--it even filtered out most of mins posts! And I never saw any real spam (like I do now). Maybe Earthink upgraded their servers. Lucky dog. I have to delete about 50 of them every couple of hours... How much you'll like it I don't know as it does show its Unix heritage (character mode display, not using the mouse etc). Take a look at it if you want at http://www.slrn.org . The neat thing is that it allows filtering of _any_ header - I have filters against specific groups, specific subjects, specific words in subjects (eg "homosexual"), anything from Google Groups (marked as low priority rather than killed outright), or, as mentioned here, crossposts to specific newsgroups. This is an extract from my score file: %BOS [sci.astro.amateur] Score: =-9999 Newsgroups:.*christian.* %EOS %BOS [sci.astro.amateur] Score: =-9999 Newsgroups:.*prophecy.* %EOS %BOS [sci.astro.amateur] Score: =-9999 Newsgroups:.*atheist.* %EOS %BOS [sci.astro.amateur] Newsgroups:.*nostradamus.* %EOS As you can see, I automatically kill anything where it is crossposted to a group with christian, prophecy, atheist or nostradamus in the newsgroup name. Makes s.a.a. a much nicer place, whether it be due to sporge or simple trolling. -- Andrew Smallshaw andrews@sdf.lonestar.org
