REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
on the creation of
SCI.ASTRO.AMATEUR

RATIONALE

A USENET newsgroup solely dedicated to the discussion of topics of
interest to amateur (or "backyard") astronomers does not currently
exist. Such discussions are currently carried out on sci.astro. The
volume of traffic on sci.astro, however, has recently grown to the point
where many people believe that a new group dedicated to the discussion
of amateur astronomy would be beneficial. Additionally, many readers of
sci.astro have expressed frustration at having to wade through the more
technical posts on the sciences of astronomy and cosmology to get to the
ones dealing with amateur astronomy.

GROUP NAME

The consensus of opinion seems to be that sci.astro.amateur would be the
best name for this new group. A few other names have been suggested:
sci.astro.observe, sci.astro.backyard, and rec.astronomy. While
sci.astro.amateur does seem to be the most appropriate name, the merits
of these other group names should be discussed.

PROPOSED CHARTER

The new group will be unmoderated and distributed worldwide.

Topics appropriate for this new group include, but are not limited to:

Observing
Using the naked eye, binoculars, or telescopes
The Moon, Planets, Stars, The Sun, Comets, Deep Sky Objects,
Constellations, et. al.

Equipment
Choosing Telescopes/Binoculars
Choosing Accessories (Finders, Drives, Eyepieces, Filters,
Observatories, etc.)

Astrophotography
Traditional
CCD
Image Processing

Astronomy Software
Planetarium Programs
Deep Sky Programs
Observatory Programs
Educational Programs

Tips & Techniques for Amateur Astronomers

Books For Amateur Astronomers

As noted above, posts dealing with the science of astronomy (or
cosmology) should be directed to sci.astro. For instance, a post asking
"How can I see/photograph the collision between Jupiter and comet
Shoemaker-Levy 9" would be appropriate for sci.astro.amateur,
while a post asking "What's going to happen when comet Shoemaker-Levy 9
collides with Jupiter," would be more appropriate for sci.astro.

CONCLUSION

This RFD is being submitted to news.announce.newgroups in compliance
with the guidelines set forth in "How To Create A USENET Newsgroup", by
Ken Kirksey <kkirk...@world.std.com >. It is being sent to sci.astro,
sci.astro.planetarium, sci.astro.research, and sci.space.science.
[[ news.announce.newgroups moderator's note: I did not have prior approval
for cross-posting to the later two moderated groups so it is being sent
to them separately. -- tale ]]

Ditto on Starlord's "sidewalk exploits", and again-all the advise,
observing reports, and equipment user reviews that give us who don't
have an astronomy club that close by help with buying equipment.

The only reason Gold has the Value it has is the effort it takes to
separate it from all the worthless Dirt. A little digging now and then never

They had nearly disappeared when I first subscribed to this group. I guess
they ran out of all credibility even among the loonies when their comet

I have noticed a lot of those people from a way back are posting on Yahoo
groups dedicated to specific telescope brands. The old brand X versus brand
Y and reflector versus refractor wars that used to occur here did actually
throw up a lot of useful information. I learned a lot more about issues
with scopes from this group than any other source (some of it even turned
out to be true ;-) ).

Oh, I'll hazard a guess that this group is in for the "Long Haul".
Folks'll wander in and out, but there'll always be People like Rod, Jan O,
Howard L (who is generally as "serious" as I am) Sam W, etc. that will be
willing to help and inform hanging around here.

Hi:

I was here from mid-late 1994, but didn't have a reliable connection
till early 1995. Besides, at the time the vote was taken, I was still
hanging-in with Fidonet Astronomy--if anybody remembers that. Come
home, dial up the local BBS and download the day's traffic with The

I read it somewhere near the start. I got to ask questions and have them
answered by some of the experts in the field.

I enjoyed reading Starlord's sidewalk exploits and treasured Rod Mollise's
considered and kind comments.

It's sad that there is more dross now than gold.

! Yeah - I remember FIDOnet. I posted a monthly events calendar for a
while. It was the basis for the year-long histoircal calendar now on
my web site.

At the time SAA votes were going around, I was just starting to get
used to SA. Didn't know wha the whole vote thing was about (I though
it was for an "elite"), but I hoped SAA was going to form.

And I can say that I'm the proud reciepient of a 1993 personal e-mail
from NL where she actually lost her cool a bit and told me to "Go to
Hell!" (complete with exclamation point).

Ah yes, fidonet and dialup. Long distance, no less, to get to one of the
few boards (remember BBS's?) that had internet portals before the web. I
first got access to usenet in 95, and have been reading (and
occasionally posting) on SAA since then. It is still one of my main
sources to get community feedback.

How quickly people forget. :-)

The first spam was the Canter and Spiegel "green card" scam circa
mid-1990s; IIRC, it appeared in every Usenet newsgroup.

That happened in 1994, the same year saa was created. But this wasn't
the first spam really - the very first unsolicited commercial e-mail
occurred already in 1978.

OK, I'll rephrase myself to: almost no spammers yet.......

because even if ther were a few spams back then, their number was
insignificant compared to today..... :-(

Spamming first occurred much earlier than that though - as a matter
of fact already in the 19th century! In the US, investment offers
were sent to multiple recipents over the then brand new telegraph
networks (the "Victorian Internet") - at the end of the 1800's.

Telegraph spam never became a big problem in Europe, because there the
telegraph stations were operatoed by the national post offices.

HI Sam,

Are you the only one who voted that still posts here. I recognise some of the
other names but don't recall any posts from them for a long time.

Klazmon.

Very cool! To have been there at the start.
