Subject: Moderated sci.astro.amateur update (what are YOU waiting on?).
With almost 40 members now, the vast majority of which are from THIS
usenet group, Moderated sci.astro.amateur IS taking hold. If you
haven't been there recently, or never plan to because of an attitude
or a blinding allegiance to usenet, then that is too bad. You are
missing many interesting posts, polls, and options which were created
by one of your fellow usenetters in an effort to offer its members a
quieter and nicer place to post WHEN THEY WANT IT. A visit to the
site will reveal to you members that post both on it and here on
sci.astro.amateur. You will also find a place to post your astro
images, a location for putting up an image of yourself with an audio
clip of your voice. This was done in an effort to create a sense of
community that this fine usenet group seems to have lost through the
attrition of most of its more contributing people. You can now view
and hear three of our members: myself, Rod Mollise, and Dave Gede.

A "Shout Box" box has just been added as well as a chat room.

Also at Moderated sci.astro.amateur is a fine and very capable
planetarium which our members (or non-members) can use for a
surprising bunch of options, including the ability to draw up DSS
images of the area in which you are interested, the position of
Jupiter's GRS as well as the location of that planet and Saturn's
moons. . .plus lots of other goodies.

Got some time to kill? Why not try one of the games in the Moderated
sci.astro.amateur Game Room? One doesn't have to be a registered
member of the forum to play these games.

There is even a board named "Enter With Trepidation," for the posting
of and responding to off topic material.

IT SHOULD ALSO BE MENTIONED THAT NON-MEMBERS CAN REPLY TO ALL POSTS.

Here is a link to the site: www.moderatedsciastroamateur.org

36 members (and growing) await you.

Uh, where you been, Bob? I and everyone under the sun has knows it is
not USENET. I never tried to fool anyone.

You're quick.

Yes, it is those people that have learned to control themselves that
need to use a kill file. WHAT?

The 36 number you quote was a erroneous number given by poster to this
forum. There are actually 43 at this point and no trolls or flamers
or idiots there. The forum has been up for less than 3 months with
all but a couple of its members coming entirely from s.a.a. (with one
coming from my tribe.net amateur astronomy forum) It has not been
announced anywhere else on the web. What would be good at this point,
2,345 members? Get real.

As for 40tude dialog, I have been using it for a number of years, but
moved to an area which is served by a completely free internet
provider (NoCharge.com). Unfortunately, it carries no newsgroups, and
blocks port 119 which stops me from using my teranews account which
would see 40tude dialog being used now. The best I can now do is
Google groups. That is the price I pay for free internet. The only
price.

In closing, let me give you a warning. Whatever you do, don't even
think of visiting Moderated sci.astro.amateur
(www.moderatedsciastroamateur.org). The membership, as small as it is
at this point, contains some very fine and prominent members from
sci.astro.amateur. . .and not one of them has had the good Lord turn
them to salt or pluck their eyes out for viewing and joining the
group.

Bye for now, Officer Bob.

Is in't a usenet groups and is dependant on access to one sever. What
ever you call your private web forum is find, but you should tell
people it isn't usenet. It is exactly a private forum, isn't it.

Too bad people can not learn to control themselves, and learn to use
a kill file.

36 is a small number of users. Very small.

I keep it very open. There is a word filter in place that handles
certain words. Topics that should be in another board are moved (this
had to be done with one posted in "Statements, Question, Answers, and
More," that was more appropriate in the board for off topic material,
"Enter With Trepidation.")

Things that would be removed are nasty attacks on members and flames
in general.

That's about it.

Handles = Censors

Self Moderation means you get to say what you want and take the
responsibilities for what you say.

Censorship means someone else decides what you get to say and what
everyone gets to see.

Censorship is generally considered a bad thing. Self responsibility
is a good thing.

There are tools to help people retain self responsibility. the chief
tool is a the delete key. This is used when the end users decides he
doesn't want to read or retain the article in his own archive.

One of the other Primary Tools is the killfile. Most all *real* news
clients have these tools available. Some of them are free and very
user friendly and powerful. 40tude's news client is both powerful and
free.

Thanks for the invite, but I'm a little puzzled by something: if non-members
can reply to all posts, then it isn't moderated any more? Isn't moderation
the point of the forum?

I don't like web based forums.

Suspect they are all either Google Groupers or Outlook Express users. Since
I use one of the best providers there is (news.individual.net) I never see
all this alleged nastiness, or spam. The few trolls that remain can be
easily killfiled.
