The optics and OTA are generally very good, the mounts generally suck. Mount them on a decent mount they're quite nice! Hi, I've got a TAL GEM mount from a TAL-1 that has sadly bitten the dust. It's steady and smooth to operate but does take some moving about if you're feeling tired. I have a older but similar Tasco 11t 114mm f/8 newtonian on an EQ mount that works well for me. I upgraded the focuser to use 1.25" eyepieces, added an RA drive, and installed a 6x30 finder scope. We use it for astronomy night in my son's Cub Scout pack. It's also easy to transport to a camping site. When things are collimated well, the old Tasco is good to about 200x. Using a Vixen 5mm Ortho eyepiece, I was able to pick out surface detail on Mars during the fall of 2005. Of course this eyepiece cost more than what I paid for the entire telescope in the first place! I think your 114mm Meade will give good views of the moon and planets. It won't do so well on deep sky objects. At 4.5" of aperture, it just doesn't have the light collecting ability. Good eyepieces will make or break this 'scope. Hope this helps, Gene DiGennaro Baltimore, Md.
