I believe the indians mentioned in Subject line had an interest in
astronomy. Are there any sites in the midwest that one can visit to see
evidence of this?

There's Cahokia Mounds, near St. Louis, MO:

The site has a reconstruction of a "woodhenge" which may have been an
observatory:

Thanks to all above. As an aside, is there any evidence of the mound people
in Indiana?

A quick Google of

"Mound Builders" Indiana

turned up quite a few hits.

Effigy Mounds at McGregor, Iowa. A federal park now.
I helped excavate it years ago as a student. Also there is
Turkey River Mound Complex further south of Dubuque, Iowa.
Both on the federal registry.

Good luck.

Here you go!

This site might help you get started. Fort Ancient is large complex of
Indian Mounds build by the mound builder indians. The site is a park
in the Ohio Historical Society, and has an excellent on-site museum on
the mound builder culture. There's also contact info on this page.

http://www.ohiohistory.org/places/ftancien/

"Modern archeological evidence suggests that "Fort" Ancient was a
ceremonial gathering place for the Hopewell Indians. The site was used
as an astronomical clock by its builders which lends support to the
theory of the site's original religious purpose. Certain mounds mark
the sunrises of the summer and winter solstices and gaps within the
earthen walls mark the minimum and maximum northern moon rises."

I would also recommend you do a Google search for
"Fort Ancient" Astronomy
and
"Mound Builders" Astronomy

for more references
