I would like to be able to read SAA and avoid the Spooge. Is there anyway to
do this?

Thanks,

Dubya

That will, of course, remove all legitimate posts from RoadRunner
subscribers as well.

That will also potentially remove a lot of other rubbish.

There's little, if anything, you can do, except hope he eventually get bored
and finds something else to amuse himself.

I have been filtering everything that has abuse@rr.com as the complaints
reply target, and this seems to be removing perhaps 90% of it (difficult
to know exactly how much).

Best Wishes

You're also blocking plenty of good stuff if you do this. That kills
everything by regular posters like Dave Jessie, Florian, and Esmail. It
will have also knocked out some good posts by more occasional denizens
on very topical subjects: Heavens-Above, a couple of meteor shower
threads, a discussion of Telrads, and others.

If you're going to do something as heavy handed as filtering out a field
commonly found in legitimate posts, you better combine it with some
aggressive positive filtering of some kind.

I do have most of the regular posters here listed in the 'friends', so am
probably not missing much. I have had a couple of threads, where I have
missed the start, but as soon as one of the known posters replies, this is
correctable.

Best Wishes

The spooge? You mean the Celtic trickster spirit that,
for the fun of it, will transport someone miles away
from where they were and (often) back again at a later
time?

Perhaps you meant SPORGE, a conflation of Spam and Forge.
But the concept of having to avoid the Spooge while
reading SAA does give one pause... :-)

And how do I do this in pan? (Linux Gnome NR.)

The flood articles are faking the message ID. When the domain name in
the message ID doesn't match the originating domain name in the path,
chances are the article is bogus.

This is a dangerous assumption to make. According to the NNTP spec
the message ID may be assigned either by the posting agent, or if
this has not been done, by the local news server. There is no
agreement on where it is done: most Windows readers seem to delegate
it to the server, but it is frequently done on the client side on
other platforms.

For instance, if you look at this post you'll see headers for three
different domains. The message ID will be
slrnSOMETHING.andrews@sdf.lonestar.org, assigned by the client I use.
The message path will depend on the server you read it from, but
will end news.cirr.com!not-for-mail, news.cirr.com being my news
server. The NNTP-Posting-Host header will be set to freeshell.org,
an alias for sdf.lonestar.org.

Which if these headers in correct? Well, they all are. They're
telling you different things. It may be slightly unusual to have
_three_ different domains in this manner but it's perfectly
legitimate.

set OE message rules to delete anything greater that 14 lines and hopr
noemal posters don't get verbose.

Nope, won't work be cause those quoting a message can make it longer
than 14 lines. Also with some newsreaders (Xananews is one that comes
to mind) filters are universal. So that means that all newsgroups would
be affected.

Best thing I've found is to check the headers and find a common string
such as the abuse line, or nttp server IP address. and filter on those.
Yes you'll have multiple filters, but You'll be building up a library
of them.
