...well good evening from us Brit's :-)

Well it's been a while since I dropped in here and I see the old
newsgroup has been hit by a few problems? Nothing it can't manage by the
way.
My main reason apart from saying hello to all my old friends was to
check on Anthony Ayiomamitis. There's real problems there with wild
fires and I'm a little concerned for him.

Anyway a big (in no particular order) Welsh "Shw mae" to Marty, Rod,
Jan, Dave, Greg, Howard, John, Sam, Bill, Esmail, David, Edward, Martin,
Steve, Chris, Florian, Dennis, Brian, Roger, Dale, William and I hope
Anthony.
If I've forgotten someone then I'm sorry but my brain started to hurt
and it ain't getting any younger

Yeah, keep up the good work of defending the astrological territory.

Let's see if you will dare promote the idea that the Earth rotates
through 360 degrees in 23 hours 56 minutes 04 seconds -

http://hypertextbook.com/facts/1999/JennyChen.shtml

Kids who are going back to school this week should learn how the 24
hour day is created from the noon cycles and from there how it is
applied to the axial cycle as a 24 hour/360 degree correlation.

Somehow you do not believe the fact that one 24 cycle elapsing into
the next 24 hour cycle is a brilliant human creation and certainly not
a natural occurence. You believe that the noon cycle is 24 hours
exactly in order to explain the 23 hour 56 minute 04 second value
using the motions of the Earth -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidereal_time

If the principles which keep 24 hour clocks fixed to the daily noon
cycle were not enjoyable and easy to understand I would not promote
them but for some shocking reason nobody wishes to touch them, even
when the words are coming from a renowned astronomer like Huygens -

http://www.xs4all.nl/~adcs/Huygens/06/kort-E.html

Maybe next year good kids will stand a chance to bypass astrologers
who cannot grasp the great achievement of the 24 hour cycle and how it
transfers to the axial cycle as a correlation based on 4 minutes of
clock time for each degree of geographical seperation making 24 hours/
360 degrees in total.Until then there are only astrologers with
telescopes.

Back when I started making mirrors and lenses I did a lot of things by
hand and always lusted after equipment that was way too expensive. I
never had any good equipment until I left my engineering job to do
this full time. Now I have all kinds of cool equipment, but no time
for any of the fun projects I used to do.

I've never left, always been here. I just don't post 'cause there
isn't much for me to post about. I'm not so much an amateur astronomer
as I am amateur telescope maker, and SAA does not offer anything for
that part of the hobby.

I know, but your expertise in optics, at least, helped us with the myriad
questions we'd had. Unfortunately, those kinds of questions haven't been
raised here in a LONG time.

Good to see you back again Roland. Anyone that thinks GTO should be a
1200 or a '64 is OK in my Book! ;-).
But I do agree with you that it seems few are "rolling their own" even

Well, it's sure great to *SEE* you, so to speak, or at least *hear* from
you, even if you ARE still here lurking... Comforting to know you're handy
with an order of magnitude (or so) greater expertise when those really tough
questions come up (and they still do...)...

Extremely unlikely, considering the consistently great dissimilarities
among them: their target NGs (and the number thereof), their posting
styles, and their pet issues all differ -- it's just that some of them
intersect here.

I've seen few of their postings myself for a long time, but
unfortunately others often reply to them, sometimes quoting extensively.
Oriel is pretty much a monomaniac; he posts here more than anywhere
else, and rarely cross-posts or starts threads. Ed Conrad is less of a
one-trick pony, having added all manner of conspiracy theories to his
Old as Coal shtick, and he spams all over the place (not very often
here). Min rarely posts to fewer than three groups at a time, usually
including a few to do with prophecy, divination &c.; he morphs
constantly, uses anonymous remailers, includes a PGP signature, and
usually justifies his text.

Those are just a few of their most obvious respective traits that come
to mind ...

Hi Jan, Esmail, Gareth, Chris and the rest... It's been a while since
I stopped by S.A.A. I never recovered really after AOL dropped it's
Newsreader...

It's nice to see Gareth, I still stop by the S.A.A. webpage just to
look at the mugshots.

Still doing the stargazing thing, I'm out there every clear night
having a good time. Still collecting astro-junk. Craigslist is
pretty much a disaster for me, I am a sucker for a deal, it gets
expensive saving all that money... Some of the stuff needs a home, I
have gotten into the habit of giving stuff away...

Still riding the bicycle, still getting older and better looking...

Still remembering the good old days, how is Nancy doing? whatever
happened to PlanetX?

Still enjoying the views through Newtonians as well as small
refactors. I picked up one the old 12.5 inch Meade Research Grades a
couple of years ago, it's pretty cumbersome but when I decide to roll
it out in the driveway it does seem to provide wonderful views. Also
acquired an RV-6 which I have been enjoying but for the trips to the
mountains it's still a DOB, still starhopping...

I have been spending time on AM and CN, I think the genesis of it all
was S.A.A, S.A.A. planted many seeds all across the net.

I guess now that I wrote down my password I will be stopping by more
often...

Anyway,,,

Best wishes and clear skies

Hehe...I remember drooling over the RV-6 ads in S&T when I was a kid.

Ahhh!!! GREAT to see you here again; I know it takes extra effort, too,
since AOL trashed their newsgroups.

Sure hope you'll try to put up with the extra tedium to get here, though,
and to continue to visit, though I know you're active elsewhere, too...
We've missed you...

This has been a great reunion, and I hope to see a few more old friends drop
in soon...

Hi Gareth!

It's so great to hear from you and all the other long-time-not-heard-from
one-time regulars here.
It brings to mind a post which really summed it up best. Made by, I
believe, 'Sketcher' at least eight years ago. I thought I'd kept a copy of
it, but seem to have lost it. He said that visiting SAA was like walking
into a coffee house where he had at least a casual knowledge of most within.
That one could eavesdrop on conversations and decide to participate or not.
That sometimes he'd know most everyone and sometimes no one...but that
should the coffee house cease to exist, a huge portion of his life would be
lost. I thought the analogy was wonderful and have never forgotten it. I
seldom post here, but I read every single on-topic post - as well as some
not so on-topic for their entertainment value, as Chris laughingly stated.
Why don't I post here that often? I guess I've learned I can learn more if
I keep my big mouth shut and listen what those with far more knowledge than
I have to say. If I'm really *really* sure I know the answer to something,
I might chime in and am always happy to see general agreement from those of
you I deeply respect.

Long live SAA. Yes, I belong to many other astronomy groups including tons
of Yahoo special-interest groups and Cloudy Nights and love them all for
what they are. But there's no place like SAA. I'm a lifer, for sure.

Gareth, I feel your pain about the loss of your driver's license. I haven't
been able to drive for many years due to loss of vision caused by a lifetime
of Type I diabetes (since age 2 in 1951). It doesn't stop me from doing
anything. Yes, it has caused a few temporary setbacks until I figured out a
new way of dealing with the situation, but stop me? No way. I guess I
impose on friends a little more than I like, but they don't seem to mind too
much - and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Peace and Clear Dark Steady Skies to all here,

A lifer (or until I accidentally fail to pay my cable bill),
Dave Jessie

I'd like to see him return to SAA. The man was magic when it came to

Right.

He's been here, posting several times in the not very distant past(the last
ones I can find quickly were in May of this year), too, but he was posting
under his real name, and not as Sketcher, so many folks might not have
realized who it was...

Maybe he'll see these posts and step out of the shadows again!!!

Since the odds are Sketcher might not be drawn into this thread otherwise,
and the fact that folks are asking about him in it, I sent him an invitation
to join us...

Hopefully, if we're lucky, he will...

Nice to hear from you, Gareth, and that you sound well.

Alas, I can offer no information on Anthony. Let's hope if he's

Hi Esmail
You still into cycling? I seem to remember you liked to move around a
lot.

Hi

These days more running than cycling, just ran my first ever marathon
in May. That was quite a challenge, but I'm glad i did it, and hope
to again.

And yup, I just moved again, now in up-up-up-upstate NY. Not so much
by choice, but that's where the job is. I'll be here for one year,
and then hopefully into a more permanent job, maybe out west, and clear
skies too. We'll see.

Right now I have some pretty nice skies, even though I still have to
find a dark site to set up a scope. Enjoy looking at the night sky
without scope/binocs a lot too.

What's new with you?

Esmail

Well my interest in Astronomy has waned a little but I have a feeling
that may be to change soon.
Everything with the family is fine, the wife and daughter are doing
great. Hannah's nearly 13 now and she's got opinions on all sorts of
things :-)

I'm still a Steelworker and things aren't too shabby in the sector at
the moment.
I received some bad news early this year. I was diagnosed with Eplilepsy
which means I've lost my driving licence and can't work night shifts.
I'm taking Tegretol which seem to be working but it has a few side
effects I could do without.

Anyway, all in all life's pretty good and as mentioned in another thread
I love the idea of a meetup for the Solar Eclipse in 2017. I saw the one
in Turkey last year and it was *spectacular*!!!

Hi kiddo! Don't know if you know...I moved from the Jersey Shore to the
Sonoran Desert. About 35 miles southwest of Tucson. I work on the Summit
at Kitt Peak for the National Optical Astronomy Observatory. Loving
every minute of it too. I'm still making photographs. My cycling has
fallen by the wayside since moving here. Dirt roads and skinny tires
dont mix. :( So, I finally got my driver's license (at age 47) and
took up driving a SUV and a pick up truck at astronomical speeds on the
'lone desert highways.'

Glad to read that your family is fine. I often think about my
"girlfriend" and wonder what that lassie is up to these days. Sorry to
hear about the epilepsy. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

My "Dean's List" daughter recently transferred to the University of
Arizona where she is a senior. She's doing great with a new cochlear
implant. She plans to go on to graduate school here and eventually
become an attorney/educational-vocational advocate/lawmaker/changer for
children and adults with learning disabilities. My "Honor Roll" son is
in his last year of High School and is the resident Meteorologist there.
He is working part time at a local hospital with his Autistic classmates.

I'll have to check my date book to see if I'm available for the Solar
Eclipse in 2017. <g >

If you're ever in the neighborhood, hitch up your horse! Can't promise
you any fish n chips, but I hear the 'steer burgers' at Fred's Arena and
Steakhouse are just awesome.

Much Love to All,
Cathy

good .. you are here after all ;-)

My interest has been very consistent, though my presence here not. Mostly
due to the fact that I wasn't having much opportunity for observing. I hope
to do more now, even if just naked eye.

Oh, sorry to hear that, I am sure it will take some time to adjust to the
changes. Most places in Europe have good public transportation, it would
be quite tricky to do without a drivers license in parts of the US.

Good attitude! .. and I am envious you got to see a Solar Eclipse. I can't
wait to see my first one .. I guess at the latest in 2017!

Ha. When I lived in LA [area], and sometimes walked by choice, I was
offered a ride on more than one occasion by strangers who assumed the
only possible reason I might be walking was because my car had broken
down somewhere.

As challenging as LA would be without a car (or with, as Brian pointed
out), where I live now would be really tough. 45 miles to the nearest
store and no public transportation at all.
