I had the most memorable experience this week. We went to the Nelson BC area on Kootenay Lake in the interior and I saw a sky that just doesn't happen in Calgary much or probably anywhere else within a reasonable distance. The weather and temperature was perfect. I saw the Perseids over 2 nights at probably 1 a minute or 1 every 2-3 minutes on average..I saw the milky way like I haven't seen it in a number of years, I had my 80mm ED to see M31 to wow the fellow campers who have never seen another galaxy. M31 and the Cass region was excellent. In total I introduced probably 15 adults, teens and kids to something they have never seen...even if M51 was a bright, elongated patch with a central region of maybe Mag 5.... The Kootenay Lake BC area is easy a great destination for dark skies even if it's 7 hours away.

I know I didn't when I resided at the Jersey Shore and I don't have an issue with it living 35 miles southwest of the City of Tucson. Allot has to do with the way the News Media in the City of Tucson reports about it. IMHO They are pretty much creating a hysteria. Just today, at my place of employment, we were discussing Tucson's light pollution with guests at our visitor's center on the summit of Kitt Peak, while swatting flies and gnats. (No Mosquitos) Light pollution *is* becoming an issue in Tucson. No matter how hard dark sky enthusiasts/advocates try to persuade the city and builders of a single family home to corporate large residential developments to install dark sky friendly outdoor lighting on the homes and to inform/educate home buyers about the lighting ordinances, they don't. Sooner than we would like, the light dome from Tucson will reach Phoenix. Cathy (NOAO) Diamond Bell, AZ

Sounds like you had a great time, Mike. Nothing like a rewarding getaway, something I'm overdue for. I lived in Phoenix Arizona back in 1988-'91, the skies even in the city were very nice seemed like you could touch the stars-not to mention beautiful sunsets, gorgeous scenery. I often think of Phoenix, and can't wait to get back there to visit someday. One question-what time was it when you were viewing the Perseids?? Clear skies, Kerry
