I went out to the hills south of Livermore CA this morning to see if the
predicted Alpha Aurigid meteor shower would take place. I got there at
2:50AM PDT. Beautiful warm summer night, clear, and waning gibbous moon
nearly overhead. Between 2:50 and 4, I saw two (suspected) Alpha Aurigids.
Activity picked up after that. Based on my notes (and it is tougher to write
under bright moonlight than I thought it would be) the peak happened before
4:30, as I saw 20 more by 4:30AM and ten more by 5AM. After that, only one
before I left at 5:30 (starting to brighten in the east).

Moonlight hampered here but I counted 5-6, short trails, not very
bright, relatively fast, but nice colors each. Nothing to shout about
and frankly a bit of a disappointment given the media hype. Didnt
try to photograph any due to the bright moonlight.... oh well...
still a beautiful summer night with neighbor dog Nick and cyotes
howling and coon fighting in the woods behind us. Nice night to
sit a ponder .... where are they!

I saw 8 between 4:10 and 5:00am. Nothing before that...not even a sporatic.
All were bright...close to Mars in bightness. All had 5deg trails...one with
a trail about 20deg long. All were orange in color though lighter/more pale
than Mars.
OBTW this was under the very bright Las Vegas sky.
