Today, while driving home on an interstate highway, I noticed the license plate on a very nice SUV in the next lane over. A couple of things made it catch my eye. First, it was one I haven't seen before and second, it was a vanity plate. I found myself first determining the home state and then moving on to the vanity message. The plate was apparently a new design for Alaska. A very nice looking and colorful depiction of the Big Dipper with a drawn-closer-for-effect Polaris. Then I was immediately struck by the vanity message. It was simply, "M1." Hmm, was this an amateur astronomer I wondered or was it just the first of several vehicles owned by "Mike?" Silly reasoning told me that a glimpse of the driver might help me decide if there was indeed a chance I was in the company of another amateur star sleuth. Pulling ahead just enough for the driver to be visible revealed a late middle aged and pleasant looking man. Now, I am not sure what that driver would have had to look like for me to say, "No way, this is not a fellow amateur astronomer, this is MIKE!," but I had no problem envisioning this man at the eyepiece of a telescope. Perhaps an insignificant event to many or most, but taken as a whole, it made my 55 mile commute home from work a bit special and one I will not forget. For those interested, I have created a mock-up of the license plate closely resembling its appearance. This can be viewed a Moderated sci.astro.amateur. If he was doing his name I would think he'd do something with more of it included. Or he could be a vintage weapons enthusiast, doubtful with that license plate background.
