The newest Moderated sci.astro.amateur board allows members to create
their own polls. There are now five up and running. Members can vote
and guests can view the results.

Polls appearing now:

1. MOTIVATION (10 straight clear and moonless nights. . .on how many
will you do some observing?)
2. WEIGH IN (If you could only observe one of the following for a
year, it would be:)
3. HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOIN' ON? (How long have you been an
amateur astronomer?)
4. THE COST OF AMATEUR ASTRONOMY (About how much money do you have
invested in amateur astronomy?)
5. NAKED EYE OBSERVING (How much of it do you do and how satisfying
do you find it?)

To hell with all of the naysayers. I wish you nothing but the best with
your forum, and hope that it thrives.

Ditto. I've come to love saa over the years, and it's been the only
astronomical newsgroup I've bothered going to for quite some time. I
hope it survives and thrives, but taking the time to skip over all the
mean-spirited crap in here lately has made it a much less pleasant place
to spend my time. I've watched other astro groups go down the toilet...
I hope saa can ride this out. I like the straight forward simplicity of
a USENET style group, but lately Martin's group has been a nicer place
to spend a little time.

Of all the moderated versions I can imagine, I would think yours
fair but I visited your site and I did not like the way topics were
parsed into a small number of catagories. That seems to defeat the free flow
and natural diversity of a ng where all kinds of things
come up, and overlap at times.

I realise some people prefer just that - narrow boxes (the way our
anestors liked caves?).

But Martin dont wear yourself out with this and get disappointed or
upset if it doesnt live up to expectations. Maybe it will. There are
pros and cons and potential in many directions depending on what
people do.... but I understand your motivation (time honored).

Good luck.

I'm getting a little tired of him constantly spamming it here.

Hey Bill, I don't like you either. But your dislike for me doesn't
lend validity to your not so subtle attacks on me or my motives.
Enough said. You are not missed at the site and low level flames like
the one you have posted here are not welcome there. You belong right
where you are.

Thanks, Matthew. . .and thanks for the initial post in the new board,
"Star Party Season." I hope the link you provided produces good
results.

OK I joined, but do not expect much of a user base unless participants
in the USENET sci.astro.amateur emigrate en masse to it.

Right now I see only about 34 members on the forum. I hope that it
grows to be like the other big moderated non-usenet forums like
Universe Today, then it will be of more importance.

In the meantime I still hang out on sci.astro.amateur

A good place to start would be for you to use your real name on your
posts but that isn't going to happen. For the many years I have been
taking from and contributing to sci.astro.amateur, there has always
been a constant desire expressed for a moderated version of the
group. That ain't gonna happen usenet-wise so I am spending my money
and my time (lots of it) to offer that alternative to those who want
it, WHEN THEY WANT IT. I make no apologies to anyone that this had to
be done in a web based forum. . .but a forum nonetheless composed of
your fellow sci.astro.amateur members. Have you visited the site? If
you did, you would surely recognize some of our contributors and
members names from the usenet sci.astro.amateur.

I have lit a candle in an effort to stop some from cursing the
darkness. A visit to Moderated sci.astro.amateur will reveal what I
bet is what you and others would like to see sci.astro.amateur
become. Say what you want, but nothing anyone can assert will
diminish the good intent I had in creating and have in maintaining the
site.

As for my updates for goings on over there, if you don't want to read
them, then don't. They have been, and will continue to be, clearly
marked as such.

Gee, this tid bit from someone who used to hide behind a nom de plume
himeself not that long ago ??? Seems to be a little bit disingenuous to me.

Maybe by the noobs. But the folks that have hung out here forever seem
to think that moderation is a bit of a slippery slope. And really what's
the point of yet another moderated Astronomy mailing list ? Or web based
forum. What are you specifically offering that isn't already handled by
the myriad of other choices ?

Maybe you should look a little deeper into *why* you would want to spend
your money and time doing this ????? Hopefully not some attempt to be a
big fish in a little pond ?

Besides why not just another yahoo group and then you can tout yourself
as the mailing list *owner* and not have to spend any money.

Not a lot different from continually being a shill for your own
purposes. But with s.a.a. being what it is I would certainly agree that
you have the right to post what you want. Without fear of being
moderated by anyone. And in the spirit of fair play <g > Are you going to
